Missouri investors rally support for a new casino near Lake of the Ozarks. The initiative could change the state’s gambling landscape

A consortium of investors in Missouri has rallied support for a proposed casino near Lake of the Ozarks. They’ve gathered enough signatures to bring this initiative to the ballot.

Originally, four petitions were in circulation. However, only one needed at least 170,000 signatures to make the ballot.

The Missouri Secretary of State’s office has greenlit language for a proposed ballot initiative. This would allow voters to consider amending the Missouri Constitution.

Specifically, voters could approve a change to the Constitution to pave the way for a 14th gambling boat license.

Current laws permit the Missouri Gaming Commission to distribute 13 gaming licenses. These are exclusive to gaming facilities on the Missouri River and Mississippi River.

A ‘yes’ vote later this year could change the game for Missouri players. They could gain access to a new casino if the certification passes.

If voters approve a 14th license, the proposed $10m casino project would nestle below Bagnell Dam along the Osage River. Wager tax revenue would fund education-related spending, from early childhood literacy programs to teacher salaries.

State Representative Don Mayhew pondered the expansion of statewide gambling. He questioned, “What is the difference between the Osage River and the Missouri River?”
