In 2023, Melco Resorts & Entertainment, the visionary operator behind Macau’s iconic properties like Altira and City of Dreams, unveiled Studio City’s new phase. This expansion added 900 opulent rooms to one of its most profitable venues.
Visa Innovations Propel Market Growth
Lawrence Ho, Melco’s CEO, champions a transformative multi-trip visa. This initiative could link Hengqin with Macau, promising long-term market benefits.
The Impact of Visa Policy Changes
Currently, mainland visitors face a one-trip limit to Macau per visa. However, the Macau SAR Government and the Economic Development Bureau of Hengqin are considering a multiple-entry system.
Macau’s Accommodation Challenge
Ho points out Macau’s looming challenge: insufficient hotel capacity. With rooms often at 90% occupancy, Macau holds only a third of Las Vegas’s room count. Moreover, Hengqin offers more affordable lodging, suggesting that multi-trip visas could foster Macau and Hengqin’s joint development.
Complementary Regions Enhance Growth
Asked about the potential impact on hotel occupancy, Ho believes the two regions would enhance each other. Macau boasts five-star hotels, while Hengqin features three and four-star options.
Melco’s Achievements and Future Plans
By February’s end, Melco secured a top spot among stocks under $10. Last April, it launched foreigner-exclusive areas in two Macau properties, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and global appeal.
